Joanne Keoney . Fifty year old neophyte tackles the rugged Karakorum in Pakistan.
Tammy McMinn. January 2000, my husband and I decided to celebrate the new millennium by climbing Kilimanjaro. We were just short of the summit when freezing rain and a leaky tent (provided by the outfitters) made summiting impossible. The route by which we descended is named Umbwe; it is the ironman route up Kilimanjaro. Signs along the way caution against going down the route. It is the highest, longest ridge in Africa. Two days later, we reached the park ranger station and while we waited to be picked up, I read the ranger's register. Tammy's name and address appeared. Thinking she might want to share her Kilimanjaro adventure, I wrote her. To my suprise, Tammy turned out to be a world record holder for snowboarding the most vertical feet in a single day. She is an Ironwoman! A neophyte snowboarded at age 22 years old, she worked on her skills and at age 32 years old, attained the world's record.
